Distraction-Free Learning
Summit Nyack’s plan to keep students focused, supported, and ready to succeed.
New York State has introduced a “Bell to Bell” ban on personal devices in schools. At Summit Nyack, we see this as a positive step — one that limits distractions, creates consistency, and helps our students thrive. Our phone policy is designed with structure, flexibility, and support in mind, so every student has what they need to succeed. Watch the video below for a quick overview.Students use only Summit-issued devices during the school day. Personal phones, tablets, and computers are not part of instruction and must stay secured in homeroom. This ensures consistency and creates a true distraction-free learning environment.
Morning: Phones are handed in at homeroom and locked securely.
Class Periods 1–4: Phones remain in the homeroom lockbox.
Lunch/Recess: Students can pick up their phones before lunch and use them freely.
Class Periods 6–7: After lunch, phones are returned to homeroom and locked again until dismissal.
End of Day: Students retrieve their phones before leaving school.
For off-campus work sites or BOCES, students may carry phones for transportation, but devices must be turned in during class or work time, and again upon returning to campus.
We understand some students may need access to their phones.
Medical: With proper documentation, students may keep their phones for health-related needs.
IEP (CSE Decisions): If a school district determines phone access is necessary, it must be written into a student’s Individualized Education Program.
Our phone routine is built into the WISE program — Summit’s Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports framework. Students can earn up to 8 WISE points daily for turning in phones on time and following expectations. These points help them stay on level and fully participate in recreational activities.
Natural Consequences: Students who do not turn in their phones simply do not earn points for that class period or day, which may affect their level. This reinforces accountability and responsibility.
We know it’s not always easy to go without a phone. That’s why we provide alternatives:
Fidget tools
Monitored music on Chromebooks
Approved MP3 players
Movement breaks with staff permission
These supports ensure student well-being while keeping the school day focused and distraction-free.
Our approach balances structure with support, accountability with compassion. By working together, we can create a learning environment where every student stays present, engaged, and prepared to succeed.
