As the holiday season comes to a close, we have a creative way to put old Christmas trees to good use.
To give our animals the chance to chow down on discarded pine trees as a tasty treat, we invite Christmas tree donations to the farm. But it’s not just a snack – the trees are actually beneficial for the animals’ health, helping to prevent parasites and providing a good source of vitamin C.
Animal Coordinator, Anna Sicari, says, “The chickens actually use it for shelter from rain, shelter from the sun, just to play in it. But I’ve seen them eating it too.” And it’s not just the birds that love the trees – goats and pigs enjoy munching on them too. Animal Coordinator, Damon Fischetti explains, “During this time of year, this is all that’s out there…The trees are bare, and this is a great way for them to substitute a lot of the nutrients that they normally get from those other trees.”
This innovative tradition started three years ago with a simple Facebook post and has since become a beloved custom among the neighbors in Nyack. So if you’re wondering what to do with your old Christmas tree, why not bring it to the Summit School Farm and give the animals a special treat? As Sicari says, “Here at the Summit School Farm, your Christmas trash is someone else’s Christmas treat.”
