Animal Care Program

The Summit School’s Animal Care Program—lovingly known as Pets for Purpose—is more than a work-based learning opportunity; it’s a powerful source of healing, growth, and connection. During the school day, students take responsibility for caring for a vibrant family of animals—including dogs, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, a bearded dragon, and a turtle. From bathing and brushing to feeding, walking, and cleaning the barn, students develop essential life skills while learning to care for something beyond themselves.

Led by Animal Care Coordinators Anna Sicari and Damon Fischetti, the program blends structure with soul. What started with just a couple of dogs has grown into a full-fledged, student-driven experience that brings joy not only to those on campus, but to the wider community. In the after-school recreation program, students take the animals on hikes and therapeutic visits to other schools, hospitals, and nursing homes—bringing comfort and smiles wherever they go.

Whether it’s a peaceful moment sitting with a goat, a long walk with a dog, or the simple joy of fresh air and muddy boots, Pets for Purpose helps students unplug, reset, and thrive. Here, every child is welcome, every success is celebrated, and every interaction is an opportunity to make a difference.

More than a Pet Project

In moments like these, the heart of Pets for Purpose comes to life. The animals aren’t just part of the routine—they’re part of the learning, the healing, and the joy. Every interaction, whether it’s feeding, brushing, walking, or simply sitting quietly together, helps students build confidence, compassion, and connection. These everyday experiences create something lasting—lessons that go beyond the barn and into every corner of life.
