Kevin's Teaching Journey

"I realized I had a gift for working with students who are really struggling. If I didn't use it to help others, the world would be worse off."

Kevin Kugler's passion for teaching began early—in seventh grade, inspired by teachers who made learning both fun and meaningful. That early spark led him straight from college into the classroom, where he discovered his true calling in special education.

Kevin's approach to teaching is deeply personal. Growing up with a parent who battled mental illness, he understands firsthand how challenging circumstances shape young lives—and how one supportive adult can make all the difference.

Innovative Course: The History and Impact of Gaming

Kevin developed this unique elective course where students learn social and critical thinking skills through the lens of video game history and culture. This innovative approach demonstrates how engaging with students' interests can create powerful learning opportunities.

Beyond traditional classroom teaching, Kevin uses Flex periods to connect with students through activities like Super Smash Bros. tournaments and Dungeons & Dragons—creating spaces where students feel seen and engaged.

Becoming a father further deepened Kevin's empathy and understanding. As he puts it, "You read about development in textbooks, but raising your own kids gives you a whole new appreciation for what students go through."

Kevin's Teaching Philosophy

"When you're trusted to teach what you love, it doesn't feel like work anymore—it feels like purpose."

His hope for students: Be kind to others.
